How to buy a slide-in camper
Axle math, wasted space, and what is actually behind the skin. Written by the people who build them.
A slide-in is a self-contained hard-side camper that drops into your truck bed and comes back out. Full standing room, real insulation, real systems, and no fabric to dry out. It is also the heaviest thing you will ever put in that bed, which is why this guide starts with arithmetic instead of floor plans.
Two decisions separate a camper you keep for fifteen years from one you list for sale in two: whether the weight works on your truck, and what the box is made of. Everything else is preference. This guide is ordered by how expensive the mistake is.
Payload is not the only limit
Every buyer's guide tells you to check the yellow sticker in your driver's door jamb for payload. That is correct, and for a slide-in it is not sufficient. A slide-in hangs a large mass behind the rear axle, which means the rear axle sees more weight than the camper itself weighs.
The camper acts on a lever. Its center of gravity sits some distance behind the rear axle centerline, and your wheelbase is the lever arm. The rear axle picks up the camper's full weight plus a share transferred off the front. The front axle gets lighter, which is why an overloaded slide-in rig feels vague in the steering and takes longer to stop.
Manufacturers of quality slide-ins publish a center of gravity location and mark it on the unit. If a builder cannot tell you where the CG is, they have not done the analysis, and you cannot do the math below.
Payload and rear axle calculator
Payload tells you whether the truck is legal. Rear axle load tells you whether it is safe. Check both. Nothing is sent anywhere; this runs in your browser.
This is a planning tool, not an engineering document. It assumes the camper's load transfers through a rigid bed and that roughly a third of cab weight lands on the rear axle. It does not account for tire load rating, hitch weight, or side-to-side balance. Once you own the camper, load it the way you travel and weigh the rig at a CAT scale. The scale ticket is the only number that is not an estimate.
Dry weight is a marketing number
Slide-in spec sheets lead with dry weight because it is the smallest honest number available. It is measured with empty tanks, no propane, no battery, no mattress in some cases, and none of the options you are going to order.
The gap between dry weight and how the camper actually rolls down the highway is routinely several hundred pounds:
- Fresh water at 8.3 lbs per gallon. A 30 gallon tank is 249 lbs.
- Two full 20 lb propane bottles at roughly 37 lbs each.
- A lithium house battery bank, 30 to 120 lbs depending on capacity.
- Solar, awning, air conditioner, generator, and jacks, each of which is usually listed as an option and excluded from dry weight.
- Your own food, clothes, tools, and recovery gear.
A truck bed is not a rectangle
Here is the thing almost nobody points out on a showroom floor. The inside of a truck bed is an irregular shape. The wheel wells push in from both sides, and above them the bed opens back up to full width all the way to the top of the rails.
Most slide-ins on the market are built to a generic footprint so one shell can be sold across many truck models. The cheapest way to handle wheel wells in that approach is to lift the entire camper floor above them and build a flat box on top. It works, and it throws away the volume beside each wheel well plus the entire strip of bed depth below the new floor. On a typical eight foot bed that is a substantial amount of usable space that you paid to haul and cannot use.

Sitting lower is not just about looks: it drops the center of gravity, which is the same thing you were calculating a few sections up.
What is actually behind the skin
This is the single hardest thing to evaluate in a showroom, because the structure is the one part you cannot see. Skin material gets all the marketing attention. Framing is what determines whether the camper is still square in year twelve.
The majority of slide-ins sold today are a skin, fiberglass or aluminum sheet, laid over a frame. In a large share of those, the frame is wood. Wood framing is inexpensive, easy to repair, and light. It also relies entirely on the shell staying watertight, because wood that gets wet and stays wet loses strength and does not recover.

The Apex is a fully welded aluminum monocoque. The structure and the skin are the same thing rather than two systems bonded together, which means there is no wood anywhere in the shell, no adhesive joint carrying structural load, and no fastener pattern to work loose on washboard. It costs more to build. It is also why we are comfortable putting one on a truck that spends its weekends on forest service roads.
How it will actually drive
A slide-in changes your truck more than any other accessory you can buy. Height, weight, and center of gravity all move at once, and they move in directions that make the vehicle less stable rather than more.
- Crosswinds and passing trucks. A tall box with a high CG catches wind. This is the most common complaint from first-time slide-in owners and it is largely determined by how high the camper sits, which comes straight back to whether the floor was contoured to the bed.
- Suspension is a fix, not a workaround. Airbags, upgraded leaf packs, and better dampers dramatically improve ride and body roll. None of them raise your GAWR or payload. If you are over the number, you are still over the number.
- Tires do more than people credit. Check the load index of what is on the truck right now, at the pressure the camper requires. Many factory tires are the limiting component once a slide-in is loaded.
- Braking distance grows. Increase following distance and use the transmission on descents. In the Cascades this matters within the first hour of any trip.
- Height awareness becomes permanent. Measure the loaded rig, write the number on a label in the cab, and check it against garage doors, drive-throughs, and trailhead gates.
What makes a slide-in genuinely four-season
"Four season" is not a regulated term, and it gets applied to campers that simply have a furnace. What actually determines whether you are comfortable at 20 degrees:
- Where the tanks and plumbing live. Tanks inside the heated envelope stay liquid. Tanks hung underneath need heat pads and still freeze at the dump valve, which is where people discover the problem.
- Insulation value and thermal bridging. An aluminum structure needs deliberate thermal breaks or the framing telegraphs cold straight through the wall and you get condensation lines on the interior.
- Windows. Single-pane acrylic is the largest heat loss path in most campers regardless of what the walls are made of.
- Heat source and how it is powered. A propane furnace draws meaningful battery power for the blower. Budget your electrical system for the coldest night, not the average one.
- Ventilation. Two people generate a lot of moisture overnight. A sealed camper in winter grows condensation. Deliberate airflow beats sealing everything shut.
Living with one
The appeal of a slide-in over a trailer is that the camper comes off and you get your truck back. That only holds if taking it off is easy enough that you actually do it.
- Jacks. Manual jacks are cheaper and slower. Electric jacks turn a forty minute job into ten and are the option most owners wish they had bought up front.
- Where it lives when it is off. A loaded camper on jacks needs level, solid ground and enough overhead clearance. Measure your garage or side yard before you order.
- Tie-downs. Frame-mounted tie-downs transfer load into the truck's frame rather than the bed sheet metal. Ask what your tie-downs actually bolt to.
- Bed protection. Whatever sits between the camper and your bed floor will determine whether you find rust under it in three years.
- Service. Ask who fixes it and where. A camper built two hours from you is a different ownership experience than one shipped in from across the country.

- What seams require resealing, and on what schedule?
- What do the tie-downs bolt to, the frame or the bed?
- What is covered by warranty, for how long, and does water intrusion void it?
- Who services this in five years, and where are they?

If the numbers did not work
